Meet the Author

Connor Marek is an 11th-grade student at Deep Run High School and a member of FIRST® Robotics Team Blue Cheese 1086. Through robotics, Connor discovered not only his passion for engineering but also a community where he truly belongs.

Growing up in a rural area without access to programs like FIRST®, Connor often felt out of place. As a neurodivergent student, he struggled to find an environment that embraced his differences. After moving to an area with more resources, he joined his school’s robotics team and found the creative outlet he had been looking for.

Robotics has given Connor confidence, a sense of purpose, and valuable skills in teamwork, collaboration, and leadership. The process of designing, testing, and improving machines has taught him perseverance and the importance of continual learning. His experiences reflect many of the same values promoted by the FIRST® program, including problem-solving, innovation, and gracious professionalism.

Much like Leo, the main character in Wired Differently: A Graphic Novel About Neurodivergence, Self-Acceptance, and Finding Your People Through Robotics, Connor’s journey is about finding belonging and celebrating differences. The book draws inspiration from his own experiences and highlights the inclusive culture of the robotics community.

Today, Connor is focused on giving back to the program that shaped him. Through his book Wired Differently, he hopes to inspire other neurodivergent students to explore STEM, build confidence through teamwork, and discover their own place in robotics. His aim is to also expand resources so more students like him are encouraged and supported to start their FIRST® journey.
